Chichen Itza
Mayan name ‘Chich’en Itza’ means ‘at the mouth of the well of the Itza (people).’ This temple city was the political and economic center of Mayan civilization, marking the greatest and best of the Mayan temples. It has three natural sinkholes providing plenty of water all year. One of the most famous sinkhole is the ‘Cenote of Sacrifice,’ sacred to the Maya rain god Chaac, where offerings and sacrifices believed to have taken place centuries ago.
